Our simple guide to take the pain out of sending your mare to Girsonfield.
Before Your Mare Is Sent
All mares must have a clean CEM swab certificate before
arriving at the stud - this can be taken at any time after
January 1st. Your own vet will advise you on the swabbing procedure.
They must travel with their passports and come with no back shoes and
a good fitting headcollar.
Transport and Arrival
We are happy to quote for the transport to bring your mare to the stud.
Once at the stud you will have regular updates on how your mare is progressing
towards her pregnancy. We highly recommend that your mare is scanned twice
before being sent home. Once at 15 - 21 days to ensure she is in foal and
again at 25 - 30 days to make sure she is not twinning - as most
thoroughbreds do not have the room in their uterus to grow twin foals
and it can end in a problem.
Care Of Your Horse
Our own vet will take over the care of
your mare when she is at the stud and any treatment decided upon, if
at all possible, will be fully discussed with you first.
All mares and foals coming to the stud must be insured by their
owners as, whilst every care is taken, we cannot be held liable
for accident or disease.
Sending A Mare For The First Time?
If you are sending your mare to stud for the first time you may be
interested in the following procedure.
Your mare will be 'tried' or teased with the stallion every other
day after her arrival. When she comes into season she will be covered
by the stallion every other day until she is no longer in season. 21 days
after the first covering we will ask the vet to scan for pregnancy and,
all being well she will be rescanned and be ready to return home after her
30 day scan.
Foaling Your Mare
We take mares to foal as it is most disheartening if your mare foals undected or the foal meets with a problem. At Girsonfield we monitor the mares with CCTV and radio alarms. Our experienced staff have foaled many mares and attended most of the Industries courses. The foaling boxes are large and have rubber walls and floors for the safety of the foaling mare. If you would like us to foal your mare please book her in as soon as possible.
